Laser Pegs toy review

“Its your imagination, LIGHT IT UP!”

In 1942 a man by the name of Ole Kirk Christiansen created a toy that would forever change the landscape of the industry. The name of that toy…LEGO, a plastic interlocking building toy that has grown into an empire worth billions.

$8.6 billion to be precise.

With continued popularity and the expiration of patents, it’s not surprising that more and more companies are now manufacturing LEGO-like products.

The big question is — can they offer something new and unique?

Enter Laser Pegs, “the first lighted construction toys in the world that feed the next piece low voltage current to illuminate your creations with LED’s.”

That’s right, Laser Pegs light up!

Laser Pegs Review

When I was presented with the chance to check out Laser Pegs, I jumped at it. Not only am I a huge LEGO fan, but so are my four boys. And, needless to say, when the box arrived, my boys ripped it open and had all the models built within minutes.

As mentioned previously, Laser Pegs are a modular building toy that lights up. Think LEGO meets Lite-Brite (for you 80’s kids). They are very similar to LEGO and have many of the same shaped pieces. The big difference is that all the parts are translucent colored so the light can shine through.

We were sent 4 sets; the Mega Truck, Formula Racer, Mini Pterodactyl, and a small vehicle (not sure the actual name of the model). Two of the sets are 4-in-1, meaning you can build 4 different models with the same pieces.

The instructions included with Laser Pegs models only included one of the variants, but the other model’s instructions can be found online easily.

Quality

I’ve bought non-LEGO brand building sets in the past and the quality has been pretty poor. Pieces not fitting together well or the plastic being brittle and breaking easily.

That is not the case here — the Laser Pegs pieces go together tightly and stay together.

The plastic used for the molding seems to be very similar to that of LEGO, and thus very durable.

Plus we’re able to link them together with LEGO and other similar brand bricks, BONUS!

What comes in a box

Most of the sets contain a single 2×4 brick that contains the LED light, switch and battery. The light bricks do a good job of lighting up the models, giving them a really cool look in the dark.

I’m not sure about the battery life yet, but I’m hopeful it’s a long time since they use 3 very small coin batteries.

All the instructions are very clear, well organized and easy to follow. They’re very similar to other toys of this genre, so if you’re used to those instructions, Laser Pegs will be a cinch to follow.

My single complaint, which contradicts one of the good points, is that the bricks are hard to separate once you have the models together. I haven’t tried a LEGO brick separator yet, but I’m sure it will do the trick.

Can the whole family enjoy Laser Pegs?

While building toys might not be something the ENTIRE family enjoys (mom, I am looking at you) I think if you and your family are the types that enjoy building toys, you will love Laser Pegs.

The fact that they light up, adding that extra dimension to your builds, is huge. Also being compatible with other brands means you can bring other builds to life as well.

The price-point seems to be in line with that of other modular building toys which is important in this competitive market.

All-in-all Laser Pegs get a strong recommendation from me.
