Spoasters can avert game disasters

Spoasters
A set of Spoasters may save your board games from disaster.

You’re in the middle of your favorite board game or card game when it happens.

One of the other players (because, for sure it would never be yourself), bumps their drink and it spills all over the table – drenching your cherished board and cards in its wake.

You grab the closest thing to dry them with as fast as you can – a towel, napkins, your shirt…

But you know that no matter how fast you dab away the liquid, your game will never be the same again.

And every time you play it, you’ll remember “that time”.

Well, those days can be a thing of the past with Spoasters!

Coasters to Spoasters

It’s hard to have a game night without something to drink. And even if it’s not at a game night, just playing a quick game with the family is always more fun with food and drink nearby.

But having drinks too close to games can spell disaster at any moment.

Unless those drinks are secure where they stand.

Spoasters
Keeping drinks nearby isn’t a problem.

And even if it’s not a drink being knocked over, the condensation that can form on a cup or glass will often drip all over when you pick it up for a guzzle.

The Spoaster takes care of both those problems.

The first thing you’ll notice about a Spoaster is the stable holder and base. Cups stay put.

If bumped, the wide base holds your drink steady.

Spoasters
Nothing to worry about here.

Plus, the Spoasters have a foam insert for the base that absorbs condensation. So when you pick up your drink, you won’t be sprinkling droplets of water all over.

I hope this doesn’t sound like an infomercial though.

We put Spoasters to the test during our game nights and we haven’t had any drink mishaps or any worries at all.

Spoasters
The cup may be empty now, but the Spoaster did its job.

Though the Spoasters can be used in many settings, we’re obviously looking at them from a gaming perspective.

The 6 Spoasters we received to review have done their job beautifully at game nights. We’ve set them out next to the cups (and other snacks) so when people go over to grab a drink, they’ve naturally grabbed a Spoaster to go with it.

One cool thing is that the Spoasters stack really nicely as well too. So having them stacked next to the cups works very well.

Spoasters
The also stack very nicely.

The downside

The only downside we’ve run into is the space they take up. The base is just under 6 inches in diameter (around 14 cm). And some games we play are table hogs. So making room for 6 more inches for a Spoaster can be challenging at times.

Even though that amount of space isn’t ideal, it’s kind of the price to pay for having such a stable base.

And really, we shouldn’t look at that total diameter as the issue. Because the cup itself takes up half that space.

Having a cup at the table already takes up ~ 2.5 inches in diameter at the base. So really the Spoaster only adds ~ 3 inches to the diameter.

Which really means that this downside isn’t too much of a downside.

Spoasters
Most games allow for plenty of room for drinks in Spoasters at the table.

Overall, Spoasters are a handy addition to use while playing games with friends and family.

  • I don’t allow drinks at the same table as my games. They are fine at separate tables or on the kitchen counter, but they do not share space with the game 🙂

    • Marc – I’ve found that a pretty common policy.

  • Game: Settlers of Zarahemla
Damage: Wooden Dice that sometimes stick together when rolled
    Culprit: Skittles

We are pretty hard core, no drinks or food during game play. Maybe a Spoaster would encourage more hydration during gaming!

    • Ginny – I can only imagine the story behind the Skilles and dice. I’m sure it’s a good one.

  • Just recently, wife had a drink at the table. It condensed. She placed a card in the condensation. She knew better. 😀

  • Looks like an interesting idea.
I’m generally not hardcore about drinks at the table though I will recommend bottles with replaceable lids or soda fountain cups with lids/straws…my main rule is only put a drink on the table if there’s table space for the drinks to be placed in a safe (-ish) place where they’re not likely to produce the condensation issue.
That said, In the case of “cups”, I generally prefer people set them on a side table or one of the nearby shelves rather than risk the spillage. For cans or bottles, the few times we’ve had spillage we’ve been able to upright the can/bottle quickly enough to avoid disaster.

Looking at these, I agree with your assessment of them taking up extra space. Though if table space is tight enough for that to be a concern, I’d recommend the side table or shelf anyway.
I also wonder about the “one size fits most.” It seems to me that it would be a good fit for some cups and only an average or mediocre fit for others. My cupboard is filled with all sorts of oddly shaped cups and glasses that folks like to use. Based on what I’m seeing, these seem to push users towards the standard “red solo cup” size cups.

Overall, it’s interesting and I might check it out but I don’t know that it’s a necessity for my needs.

  • Had a bottle of cologne break in my backpack with all my magic decks. Turned all the black cards blue. But on the plus side, victory never smelled so sweet.

  • My dog chews all things plastic. I went to the kitchen and I cough her chewing dome minis from one of my game.

  • I actually caused the damage myself–spilled a glass of white wine on one of my Machi Koro cards! 😉

    • Amanda – That’s sad to hear. Unfortunately, I don’t think Spoasters would stabilize a wine glass.
