82 Different Games Played so far this year

Phase 10 card game
It’s fun to pull out some old games.

After Caleb, Ma, and I finished playing a game of Phase 10 this afternoon I got to wondering about how long it’s been since I’ve played Phase 10. I’d guess it’s been about 8 years or so.

Wow that seems like a long time.

Being in the game review world, we tend to play newer games at the expense of older or classic games.

Of course, Phase 10 isn’t the only game in our game closet I haven’t played for years. I’m sure I could add a lot of fun games to that list as well.

Even though we cull our games every once in a while, there are numerous board games and card games that are great games to have on hand when the right time strikes. As such, there’s a lot of games that I don’t see us ever parting with. Phase 10 is one of those games.

That train of thought however, made me curious about my game playing history.

So I jumped on BoardGameGeek.com and took a look at my game play stats to see where I stand for a mid-year game report.

Dominion Seaside card game
Dominion will most likely hit the most played list for years to come.

Most Played Games so far 2013
First off, I’ll say that I love having a way to record the games I play. I guess I’m a stats geek because I love tracking things. And having a BoardGameGeek.com app on my phone that let’s me record a game right after I play it is pretty cool in my book.

Last year I posted a mid-year game report because I had set a goal to play over 100 different games for the year. (Fun goal, eh?) As of June 2012, I had played 68 different board games and card games.

Even though I didn’t set a similar goal this year, I enjoy playing a wide variety of games. Since this year has been so busy though (kids activities, new job, more business travel), I was quite surprised when I ran the report for 2013.

As of today (July 26) I’ve played 82 different board games, card games, and party games this year!

Kingdom Builder Nomads board game expansion
Love Kingdom Builder.

I was quite surprised.

What I wasn’t surprised about was which games I’ve played the most. I knew a lot of my favorite board games would be on the list.

The cool thing to see though are the games that I didn’t have on my Top 14 Best Board Games list. In particular, 3 of the games that hit my most played games list for this year are games that we just bought this year. (So they couldn’t have made my Top 14 list.) Those 3 games are:  Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd EditionRoboRally, and Escape: The Curse of the Temple.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition board game
Will the boys ever get enough Descent?

The top 15 games that I’ve played the most this year so far, in order of times played, are:

RoboRally board game
The robot chaos in RoboRally is so fun!

I think it’s obvious that I’d highly recommend any of these games – lots of fun!

(Click on the game name above to see our full review.)

You may also notice that 1 game on this list we haven’t posted a review for yet – Escape: The Curse of the Temple. Let’s just say that we’re anxious to post a video review of it because we’ve have a lot of fun with it. So stay tuned…

I don’t know how many different games I’ll end up playing by the end of the year, but I’d like to think that a number of them will be games I haven’t played in years.

Time to pull out some of the great games from years ago.
