Codenames party game review

Codenames is an engaging word party game where 2 teams compete to locate their agents amidst a 5 x 5 grid of words on the table.

Each team has one Spymaster who can give a 1-word clue each round for their teammates to locate their agents. Spymasters need to think creatively and their teammates need to decipher the clues well to find their agents first.

With 200 double-sided cards, the possible mix of words in the grid are endless – creating a game with a ton of replay value. It’s a game that anyone can join in having fun playing.

Enjoying new games this week

With the kids out of school for two weeks and myself having time off from work during the holidays, it’s a fantastic time for playing board games!

To add to the holiday fun, we’ve had a very white Christmas. Aside from shoveling the driveway and walks many times over the last week, we love having thick blankets of snow everywhere.

The deep snow also makes for a great time to cozy up inside near the fireplace and watch movies and play games. We’ve had our Star Wars run (watching episodes 1-6 over the last month in prep for The Force Awakens last week), as well as a handful of Harry Potter movies. And we’ve had some great laughs playing Just Dance, Mario Party 9, and Rayman Raving Rabbids.

We also took advantage of the fresh snow on some good sledding hills nearby. And of course, we’ve played a bunch of board games.

Super Dungeon Explore: Forgotten King board game review

One of the things we like best about Forgotten King is that it contains two play modes:

Classic Mode, in which someone controls the dungeon and its monsters while everyone else takes the roles of the heroes.
Arcade Mode, which allows for a fully co-operative game for up to five players.

Since it’s sometimes tiring to get beat by my hero boys, I really like the Arcade Mode where we’re all on the same team against the onslaught of monsters.

Dead Men Tell No Tales board game review

Get ready to board a burning ship with your pirate crew and grab all the loot from the remaining skeleton crew before it’s too late. Because if you’re unable to search the whole ship, if there are too many explosions, if deckhands overrun the ship, or you if run out of pirate crew before you grab all the loot, you’re done for.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a new cooperative board game from Minion Games and we’ve had a blast playing it!

Timeline Challenge Board Game Review

In Timeline, players compete to get rid of their historical event cards by placing them correctly in the growing timeline. But with Timeline Challenge, Asmodee has stepped the game up a notch. This new board game brings a twist to the Timeline games by introducing a variety of historical date challenges.

I don’t know if we’ll ever play Timeline the normal way again.

Duplik party game review

We recently wrote about Duplik a couple of times since both Mom and Brooke listed Duplik as one of their Favorite Board Games. It’s a fun game we just got a couple months ago and it quickly jumped into a top games spot for both of them.

When you hear it’s a drawing game, don’t be alarmed. You don’t need to be any sort of an artist to win.

How well you draw may not matter, but how fast you draw will have an impact.

Now that everyone else in our family has shared their Favorite Board Games, it’s time for me, Dad, to share my favorites.

While everyone else in the family hasn’t updated their list since 2012, I consider my list a bit more frequently.

Last year (Fall of 2014), I posted my Top 100 Best Board Games. However, I didn’t consult that list, nor my 2012 Top 14 Best Board Games, before creating my current Favorites list below. I wanted to think through my favorites completely fresh.
