Wow has car racing come a long way since I was a kid!

Bridging video games, mobile games, and physical track car racing, Anki Overdrive is a ton of fun!

Or as we like to call it in our house, Mario Kart Live.

Why? Because Anki Overdrive is the modern way to race cars in your living room.

It’s an amazing racing system where the cars fly around a variety of tracks but players control their cars through their digital devices. And just like in racing video games, players earn points through their accomplishments on the track and use them to level-up their cars and equip them with all sorts of gadgets.

We’re ready to race!

We bought Anki Overdrive last Christmas for our family and we’ve had a blast with it!

So as we’re approaching Christmas again, we thought it would be a perfect time to share it with you.

The best way to get a feel for the game is by watching it in action!

Check out Caleb and Trevor’s video review of Anki Overdrive.

Can the whole family enjoy Anki Overdrive?

You bet they can!

Though you better watch out. Because the youngsters are going to have an advantage over the older folks when playing Anki Overdrive.

These digital natives, who are used to playing video games, will take to these controls with ease.

But even mom and dad can join in the fun. (And kids will have a blast beating them.)

Even when not playing, it’s hard not to enjoy sitting and watching the races as well. This modern racing simply draws people in.

Amazing Mix of Digital and Physical Play

One of the gripes of parents everywhere is that kids spend too much time on their digitial devices or sucked into video and computer games. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why we enjoy telling people about board games — as a way to get face-to-face time with the whole family.

Well, with Anki Overdrive we’ve found a fantastic mix of both physical and digital worlds.

Kids will immediately be drawn to it because of the technology and competition but it’s also something physical to share together.

Taking turns is automatic.

And the technology behind Anki Overdrive is amazing.

As you can see in the video review, players control their speed, changing lanes, and firing weapons.

Players don’t have to worry about navigating corners because the cars take care of that themselves.

Before starting a race, the cars will automatically start driving and “read” the track to discover the layout. Then they’ll line themselves up at the starting line and will be ready to go.

The cars scan the track to determine and remember the layout!

Then the app will count down and the race will begin.

And racing isn’t the only way to play Anki Overdrive.

There are actually 4 modes of play: Race, Battle, King of the Hill, and Time Trial

Doesn’t that sound just like a video game?

In addition to those 4 modes, a single player can go into Tournament mode and race against bots.

Of course, bots can also be added to play against in those other modes as well.

We’re also very impressed with how easy it is to change the track. The thin track segments are held together magnetically.

Simply get them near each other and they’ll pop together.

The track pieces snap together and apart so easily.

Add to the fun

Since we knew that we’d want to all be playing together, when we bought Anki Overdrive last year we went ahead and bought 2 additional cars at the same time.

The Anki Overdrive Starter Kit comes with 2 cars and enough track pieces to construct 8 different tracks.

Leveling up the cars and equipping weapons and abilities adds to the fun.

We’ve also added the Speed Kit and Launch Kit — which add more straight track pieces and a jump. There’s also a Corner Kit and a Collision Kit that you can add to the fun.

If you loved playing with race tracks as a kid like I did, you’ll get a kick out of this modern racing.

And if you’ve got kids who love video game racing, Anki Overdrive is a great way to bring that to the physical world you can enjoy together.
