9 Funny-themed Board Games

Board games are all about fun!

That’s why funny themes can make board games a blast.

Here’s 9 of our favorite funny-themed board games that are great to play with your family.

Abandon Ship board game
Get ready to save the rats!

Abandon Ship

With a sinking ship out at sea, of course our first thoughts will be for the rats – right?

In Abandon Ship, players are cheering for the rats to make it safely to the top of the sinking ship. Well, each player is actually working to get some of the rats to the top at the expense of the others. Abandon Ship is a great family board game with an off-the-wall theme. And the board itself – as a sinking ship – is very cool. Who would have thought maneuvering rats on a sinking ship could be so fun.

Monkey Lab board game
Save the monkeys!

Monkey Lab

Now that the rats are safe, let’s save the monkeys!

In Monkey Lab players take on the roles of monkeys racing through a lab trying to rescue their fellow monkeys from cages while staying clear of the guard. Of course, just because players are on the same mission to save monkeys, it doesn’t mean they’re working together. The player that saves the most monkeys wins, so it’s still every monkey for himself/herself.

Lemming Mafia board game
Who’s going in the drink Sammy?

Lemming Mafia

From rats and monkeys to lemmings…

Poor lemmings get a bad rap in society. They’ll follow each other anywhere. Well, what would happen if the lemmings were entangled in the mafia business?

Lemming Mafia is a hoot. Players maneuver the lemmings along the path and secretly vote on the order in which each lemming will jump off the end of the pier – or get “cemented” and thrown in the river. With speeding black vans, cement and jackhammer spots, as well as betting spots, Lemming Mafia is a light, family friendly board game with a very unique theme. Tons of fun.

Hey, That's My Fish
Time to gather the fish.

Hey, That’s My Fish

While we’re still in the water, let’s go fishing – as penguins!

Hey, That’s My Fish is a great family board game where players are penguins trying to gather the most fish. Instead of a tile-laying game, Hey, That’s My Fish is a tile-removing game. As penguins gobble up the fish, the tiles are removed, leaving less areas to roam. It’s great for cutting off opponents and keeping the good catches for yourself.

Duck, Duck, Go! board game
Bathtub racing at its finest!

Duck, Duck, Go!

Now let’s turn to another water fowl – Ducks, and another body of water – the bathtub!

In Duck, Duck, Go! players race their rubber duckies through 3 bathtub checkpoints before heading for the drain. The first duck there wins. The catch is that players simultaneously select their movement path each turn. Once revealed all ducks move, but depending on which moves first, the others may be pushed off course. Simple fun with a funny theme.

Worm Up board game
Are your worms ready to race?

Worm Up!

Let’s slow things down now for some worm racing!

Sure it’s a race, but don’t expect these worms to break any speed records. In Worm Up! players advance their worm segment by segment to the finish line. Players also select which number to play and simultaneously reveal it. If two (or more) players chose the same number, they don’t get to move that turn. Simple choices, and simple movement makes for a funny-themed board game for kids.

Bridge Troll board game
I like these tasty travelers.

Bridge Troll

Enough with the animals – now it’s time to eat bridge trespassers!

The 3 Billy Goats Gruff is a favorite children’s tale – told from the viewpoint of the billy goats. But flip it on its head and now you’re seeing it from the troll’s perspective. In Bridge Troll players lure townsfolk to their bridge to either use for food or money to build the bigger and better bridge. A simple twist on a familiar tale for troll grunting fun.

Get Bit card game
Get your pirate and get swimming!

Get Bit!

Let’s dive back in the water for a bit. But as animals this time.

In Get Bit! players are trying to get away from an animal – the shark. It’s a silly game with fantastic characters that literally lose arms and legs throughout the game. It’s another simultaneously selection game where players try not to be the last in the swimming line – or they’ll lose a limb. Lose all 4 limbs and you’re out of the game. Last player swimming away wins.

Fast Flowing Forest Fellers family board game
Racing all over the river.

Fast Flowing Forest Fellers

I don’t know why there happens to be so many water oriented funny-themed games on this list, but we’ve got one more for you. It also happens to be another race game. But this time players are lumberjacks racing down the river.

In Fast Flowing Forest Fellers players get their own deck of movement cards to choose how far and when to move which of their lumberjacks. The first player to get all their lumberjacks down river wins. What’s really fun is bumping logs into other players or even better – bumping other players into currents that drive them back up stream.

  • Awesome list! We have 4 of them! Definitely going to check out a couple of the others…

Duck, Duck, Go! is also awesome with younger kids if you get the ‘Junior’ promo pack. It exchanges several of the cards for a child-specific deck that is ONLY movement any number of positions rather than a specific shape. Awesome if you can get it!

Also, for another water/funny-themed game, you should check out Mayday’s “Walk the Plank”.. Definitely good for a laugh and our family always loves it.

    Keep up the great articles!!

    • Jason – we did think of putting Walk the Plank on the list as well, but decided to stop at 9. It’s fun pulling the plank out from under or pushing others into the sea.
