The Board Game Family in the News

Which games will your family enjoy?

Our family was referenced in a news article this week that’s put big smiles on our faces!

We were pleasantly surprised to see us mentioned in The Deseret News article, “Which board games are right for your family?” earlier this week.

We weren’t just happy because we were referenced in the article. We were also happy to see such a great article outlining the wide variety of modern board games that families can enjoy playing together.

Cody Carlson writes about board games for The Deseret News on a regular basis. And this week his article serves as a great introduction to so many different types of family board games.

His short intro tells exactly what the article’s about:

While many people have most likely heard good things about these new games, they are often intimidated by learning new mechanics and rules. The following is a guide to many different types of board games on the market today to help you and your family choose one that will be right for you.

KingdomBuilder board game
Kingdom Builder is a great family board game that we’d group with “gateway games”.

In the article he describes different type of games in a couple short sentences and then provides a number of game titles that fit into each category. The categories he covers are:

  • Gateway Games
  • Light Card Games
  • Deck-Building Card Games
  • Board Games with Deck-Building
  • Worker Placement Board Games
  • Light War Games
  • Cooperative Board Games
  • Hidden Traitor/Secret Identity Board Games
  • Pick Up and Deliver Board Games
  • Hidden Movement Board Games
  • Miniatures Games
  • Epic Civilization Building Games
Shadows Over Camelot box
Shadows Over Camelot is a great cooperative family board game with a traitor element.

And with an average of 4 recommended games for each of those categories, that’s over 45 great board games and card games to choose from. Check out the article: “Which board games are right for your family?

It’s great to see such a fun family topic get time in the news. And even better if it helps families set aside time to be together for some face-to-face positive interaction and enjoyment.

I love talking and writing about great family board games. But I really love hearing from people around the world letting us know how our board game reviews (video or written) have helped them find some great games for their families.

(It’s also fun to be in the news – like when we were on TV!)

Happy gaming!

P.S. Cody’s second board game article this week covers one of my personal favorite board games – Memoir ’44.

  • It’s great to see articles like that. Board games do seem to be catching on to an extent, but I haven’t met that many people that venture beyond a gateway game.

It’s amazing to me how many people have played a gateway game but then go no further. I can’t tell you how many times when I’ve mentioned that I like to play board games people’s eyes light up and then they say, “I have a game called Settlers of Catan. Have you ever heard of it?” Later on if in the conversation if I mention pretty much any game I have they’re completely lost.

Either there’s a brick wall in the gateway or the more popular gateway games aren’t really gateway games anymore.

    • In general I’d say most people enjoy playing what they’re familiar with and don’t explore a ton. They’ll be happy to be introduced to a new game now and then through friends, but are more comfortable just going back to previous enjoyable games.
