Curses – first Christmas game played

It’s really no surprise that there were a number of board games under our Christmas tree this year.

While it was a lower count than other years, the few board games we did get will be enjoyed a bunch.

The funniest comment came from our 15 year old son after he saw Caleb open a game. “Dad gives us kids games so he can have more to play.”

Bring on the Descent expansions!

He’s only figuring out that system now?

Of course, I think his comment also came before he opened his Descent: Journeys in the Dark Merick Farrow Lieutenant Pack. Because he had some wide eyes after he opened that gift. And Caleb got excited as well when he saw Trevor open an expansion as well – Descent: Journeys in the Dark Labyrinth of Ruin.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark has been the most-played board game for our boys in 2013. So getting an expansion and a Lieutenant Pack for the game was sure to be a hit.  The Labyrinth of Ruin expansion looked like the best expansion bet for us because in addition to new heroes, monsters, and quests, it also includes a whole new Campaign. We’re looking forward to plenty of Descent fun still to come.

But the first game box opened and played on Christmas day was Curses!

Curses is a party game that Brooke reviewed 4 years ago when we were just starting out reviewing family board games. At the time, we rented a number of board games from a local game store, Boardgame Revolution. And Curses was one of those first game rentals.

The kids enjoyed it a bunch and we rented it afterward as well for some of their parties. However, we never bought a copy.

But Brooke has continued to talk about it – wanting to play it many times over the years. So we finally bought a copy of Curses for her for Christmas.

One more Curse to keep track of.

And sure enough, it brought a big smile as soon as she opened her present. Not only from her, but all the kids.

Once presents were opened and we started eating breakfast, Brooke quickly set it up on the kitchen table and we dove into playing.

Not a bad way to start the day at all – with silly laughter as we tried completing challenges while trying to perform our curses at the same time.

Having 5 Curses in front of you to keep track of can get overwhelming at times. By the time I went out, I was talking like a witch, with clenched teeth, with an echo, with hiccups, and slapping my face when I read a card. Try doing that while describing the 5 ice cream flavors of the day…

Lots of fun!

For a quick recap on how to play – here’s Brooke’s video review of Curses from 4 years ago.

The other 2 games we had under the tree were Timeline: Diversity and Portobello Market. We’re looking forward to getting those played as well. But first, I’m sure well get a few Descent quests in.

We hope you enjoy all the games your family received this Christmas!

  • As I understand it, Portobello Market is basically the same game as one I have, called Illium. It’s fun, but every time I’ve played, the table was silent. Not a bad thing; everyone was thinking about what to do next and what treasures to score!
(Illium is a Knizia game, so that might explain the silence, too…)
