Can the whole family enjoy Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game?

Adventuring is a blast!
While everyone in your family may love adventures, Fortune and Glory won’t appeal to everyone in the family. It’s definitely not meant for younger kids. First, there’s simply a ton to take in – many different card decks and a bunch of options to choose from. Second, there’s a lot of reading – with every card presenting a new challenge. And third, the length of play time will doom any youngster.

The game length will turn away many older kids and adults too. In fact, when we first got the board game (I bought it as a family Christmas present last year) our teenage boys were even turned off at the stated 90 – 180 minute (3 hour) game time on the box. That’s why it took us until now to finally sit down and play it.

Enemies are taking over.
The weekend before school started, the boys were in a mood to spend a Sunday afternoon playing games. So we pulled out Fortune and Glory and set off on our adventures. There are a few different ways to play the game – competitive or cooperative and basic or advanced – and we decided to give it a run competitively at the basic level. Even with that our first game of Fortune and Glory clocked in at 5 hours!

We took a break for dinner after the first 3 hours and then came back to it fresh for a couple hours before bedtime. And we had a great time. A lot of the time in the beginning was understanding the flow of the game and all the different facets. But once we started acquiring some of the artifacts, our turns were rolling along a lot smoother.

Fantastic miniature playing pieces.
Of course, our luck with the dice didn’t seem to be in our favor, so that also added to the length of the game. But we didn’t mind at all because we were having a great time together.

What a monster game!
Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game is easily the biggest board game on our shelves. It’s very long and thick and will always be easy to spot. But it packs in a ton of stuff.

In addition to the tons of cards (over 330 in 13 different decks), fortune and glory chips (120), and tons of different tokens, the game comes with 39 highly detailed plastic miniatures including heroes, villains, enemy soldiers, Mayan temples, and a Zeppelin air ship. It also comes with an original cd soundtrack to get you in the adventuring mood.

So you’ll definitely need a large table to play on. While the game allows for up to 8 players, even with just 4 of us playing, it completely covers our dining table.

Dice rolling, luck-fest
One of the reasons the game may last a long time is because there’s a lot of dice rolling in Fortune and Glory. Everything in the game hinges on dice rolls. You roll to see who goes first in each round. You roll to see how far you can move. And you roll and roll again with every danger, cliffhanger, and enemy you face.

Facing dangers everywhere!
Sure there are choices you need to make in the game. But those decisions are typically where you want to seek your adventure and how much you want to press your luck when you get there. But that hasn’t stopped us from having a great time playing.

We’ve definitely felt frustration when our dice rolls don’t want to cooperate with us. But instead of wanting to give up, we just play it up with the whole theme of the game. And some dangers seemed to knock us out every time – which then created more tension every time one of those dangers would resurface. They kept us all engaged for the dice roll results even when it wasn’t our character facing the danger.

So many artifacts to find.
The great thing about bad die rolls though is that players don’t get eliminated from the game. If you fail your danger, you face a cliffhanger which you’ll have to wait until your next turn to attempt to pass. And then if you fail your cliffhanger challenge (or lose in an enemy fight), then you’re simply “knocked out” and have to return to your start location. Just dust yourself off and go for it again. After all, don’t all adventure heroes come out unscathed during their travails?

How does Fortune and Glory score on the “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger GameFortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game isn’t a board game we’ll play every day. And it’s not a game we’ll play back-to-back either. Since it clocks in as a longer game with a lot of luck, it’s going to be a game we pull out on long weekends, school breaks or when we’re in an adventure theme mood.

We’ve also only scratched the surface on the game play itself and look forward to trying the cooperative mode as well as playing it with advanced rules. And while we can’t imagine how long it would last with 8 players – I am curious enough to give it a shot one of these days.

The kids have fall break from school in October. I can feel some more adventure in our near future…

  • Having just played this game a week ago with two boys, 13 and 12 and a girl 8, almost 9, and myself 30. I have to say it really is a lot of fun. We played competetively on the advanced level and we all had a blast. The girl said it was too hard, but mostly because she was rolling the worst of all of us. If she had rolled better she wouldn’thave thought it so hard. I believe the advanced rules actually speed up the game because you have more ways to get fortune. The 12 year old was having so much fun that even after he had all his fortune, he didn’t want the game to end and kept playing. So our 150 minute gamed turned into 180. But such a fun game you hardly notice the time. And once we play a couple more times I think we’ll be able to shorten the time. Fun, push your luck, dice game.
