Mix it up with FlipOut

FlipOut
We’re ready to play!

Sometimes you just want to sit down and play a nice light, fun family card game. Well, next time you’re in that mood, you ought to grab the recently released card game by Gamewright – FlipOut.

At the core, FlipOut is a set collection card game. You’re simply trying to collect sets of 4, 5, or 6 similarly colored cards at a time. Sound easy right?

But with FlipOut it’s the game play that makes collecting those sets unique and fun. Check out Trevor’s video review of FlipOut to get a taste of what makes FlipOut a great family card game.

Can the whole family enjoy FlipOut?

FlipOut
Plenty of brightly colored cards.

FlipOut is a great card game that everyone in the family can play – from very young to old as can be. The manufacturer recommended ages on the box says 8+, but don’t let that stop the younger kids from playing. Once you explain the ways to move cards around they’ll be all over it. They’ll love swapping cards and switching them around.

But also be aware that the youngest kids may not be able to plan ahead on all their moves and exchanges though. To keep it light and fun for your family when playing with younger kids, please don’t try to crush them. It’s the perfect game to let them gang up on dad or mom – always swapping out from their racks to mess up their sets.

The only downside that we can find is that not all of us can play at the same time. FlipOut can only accommodate up to 5 players and we have 6 in our family. So the way we get around that when everyone wants to play at the same time is to have two people team up – usually Caleb or Brooke with mom or dad.

How much luck is involved in FlipOut?

Keep in mind that there’s a lot of luck with FlipOut. What cards you get in your rack are going to be totally random. And you never know what the player just before you is going to do with cards in your rack. So planning ahead may be tough. But even still, you’ll have opportunity to make the best of what you’re dealt based on your swapping, flipping, and switching choices.

And that’s one of the strong reasons why we think this is a great family card game – a great mix of luck and choices. It has enough luck to keep everyone in it having fun and not a lot of strategy to intimidate players.

How are the game components in FlipOut?

FlipOut has beautifully colored and patterned cards that are super sturdy to boot. There are 90 double-sided cards that are random on their color combinations. A card with blue on one side may have blue on the back, or orange, or yellow, or green, or purple – you just don’t know. The cards are also glossy and thus kind of slippery but they’re very durable and we don’t worry about them lasting for generations of family game play.

And the card racks are great devices to keep the opposite side of the cards hidden from view as you play the game – very essential in this game.

How does FlipOut score on the “Let’s Play Again” meter?

FlipOut scores high on our “Let’s Play Again” game meter. It’s a very simple game to pull out and play. The only set up is putting your rack together and dealing out the cards. It also doesn’t take very long to play, so when the kids all call out “let’s play again”, it’s just a quick reshuffle and we’re off and playing again.

Thanks again Gamewright for a fantastic family card game!
