Box artwork is an accurate representation.

One look at the box of Hey, That’s My Fish and you can tell that it should be a fun family board game. The good news is that in this case telling a book by its cover is pretty accurate. Hey, That’s My Fish is indeed a fun game for the whole family.

Can the whole family enjoy Hey, That’s My Fish?

Hey, That’s My Fish is a board game that everyone in your family can enjoy – from young to old. Younger kids will love moving their penguins around, collecting tiles of fish and watching the playing area of ice flows shrink. Older kids will enjoy figuring out the strategies of how to ensure that they collect the most fish.

But rest assured that it’s not just a board game for kids. We’ve heard from a number of people about how competitive adults can be with Hey, That’s My Fish as well. There can be some serious battling going on for fish when you sit a group of adults down at the game.

What’s the best number of players to play with?

Hey, That’s My Fish can be played with 2, 3, or 4 players. And depending on how many people are playing, each player uses a different number of penguins. So with 2 players, you get to use 4 penguins and the number goes down as you add players. Changing the number of penguins each player helps keep the play area and options in check and makes for good balance. So it’s hard to say which is the best number of players to play with.

We really like to play with 4 players because it keeps you on your toes as the fish tiles and your options seem to dwindle more rapidly. But a 2 player, head-to-head game can be fun as well as you have more options of which penguins to move and need to be careful in your choices.

How much luck is involved in Hey, That’s My Fish?

There isn’t much luck involved in Hey, That’s My Fish. This is a board game that’s more about strategy than luck. What makes it a great family game is that the level of strategy and skill involved is completely up to the players.

The only luck involved in the game is during set up where you randomly set out all the fish tiles. So where the tiles with the 1, 2, or 3 fish on them is completely random. But once the play area is established, it’s all about strategy – figuring out where to place your penguins for their opening positions and then where to move them to as the game progresses.

How does Hey, That’s My Fish score on the “Let’s Play Again” meter?
Hey That's My Fish board game

Hey, That’s My Fish scores high on the “Let’s Play Again” board game meter. Games don’t take a long time, and it’s really easy to put the tiles back on the table for another play. So you can end up playing a number of games in a row and have fun with it as long as you’d like.

While the version of the game we have was published by Mayfair, it was just announced last month that Fantasy Flight is releasing a version of the game for mobile devices and for the Mac OS. • I really like Hey, That’s My Fish, but I prefer it with just two. With three or four, somehow it feels more random — you can go from rosy to doomed pretty quickly if your opponents choose to gang up on you. Granted, that’s not random (it’s politics), but still.

If people choose to gang up on you in Blokus (another great game), you’ll likely still have plenty of options.
