2-Player games: Head-to-head fun

We just added a new section to our website: 2-Player Games
These are board games and card games that we’ve reviewed that are great for head-to-head, 2-player fun.

Head-to-Head
Head-to-head competition can be intense.

A couple weekends ago we pulled out Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation and it fanned the flames of getting some great 2-player games going again. It had been a while since we played LOTR: The Confrontation and we’ll reiterate that it’s a fantastic game! If you’re looking for a tense game where you always think the other side had the upper-hand, then this is the game for you. The best way to play it is to take turns playing both sides of the confrontation – once as the fellowship and once as Sauron’s forces.

Pulling that game out, as well as our recent review of Mastermind, helped push us into 2-player game mode. But what really got us going on a recent run of 2-player games was a new game we got last week called Hive. It’s a two player game where you’re trying to surround the other person’s queen bee. You have a number of insect tiles (ant, spider, grasshopper, and beetle) that each have their own special ways to move. It’s a fantastic, abstract game that keeps you thinking. And I’m sure we’ll have a video review coming up for it soon.

We also got a new game (new to us) last week that’s a 2-player game that we’ve heard fantastic things about for a number of years – Memoir ’44. And it’s all set up in the other room right now – just waiting to get our inaugural play of the game.

All of this play made us realize that we needed to have a page on our site dedicated to 2-player games. So whether it’s one child against another, parent against child, or mom and dad going head-to-head after the kids have gone to bed, 2-player games are a great way to fit in some game time together.

So take a quick peak of some great 2-Player Games and let us know what games you love playing when it’s just you and one other going head-to-head in a game.

  • Hive is a game that’s been on my radar for awhile. It’s definitely one that I would like to play. I’ve been playing Lost Cities quite a bit lately. It’s a quick two player card game that’s got some fun strategy. 7 ate 9, Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries (it’s a two to three player map), Memoir 44, and Mr. Jack are some other fun ones. I’ve written a blog that has some other games that play great with two, but can also play more – http://theboardgamenut.blogspot.com/2009/10/two-player-games.html.

  • Hive is fantastic! It goes on all of our Scout campouts because it cleans up easily if it gets dirty. And it has quite a following; three of us leaders have copies!

  • Both Hive and LOTR Confrontation are great games. I recently purchased Battlelore, and I have to say I love it. My nine-year-old and I have played it about fifteen times in the last two weeks, and the system, which is similar to Memoir 44, is simple enough that he got it easily.

    Enjoy.
