Code 777 – Can you crack the code?

Code 777 Box
Get ready to crack the code.

Code 777 has been a hit board game in our family. We picked up a copy of Code 777 right when it released because it looked to be a promising board game of deduction. And we haven’t been disappointed. It’s a great game of deduction and gets the green light from everyone in the family.

But it’s not only our family that really likes Code 777 – our extended family really enjoys it as well. And this time, they got in on the video review with us. See what Trevor and a couple of his teenage cousins have to say about Code 777 in their video review.

Can the whole family enjoy Code 777?

Code 777 Tiles
Great components for a great game.

Our family really likes Mastermind and Clue – a couple of great, classic deduction games. And we’re happy to say that Code 777 makes a great addition to our game library. It brings it’s own element and manner of deduction to a game setting – a type of deduction that we’ve really enjoyed.

And I’ll tell you right up front that what surprised me most was that Michelle (mom) loved Code 777 immediately. I was actually hesitant in having her play since I thought she’d be turned off by the tense deduction. But that’s where I need to admit to the error of my ways. She really likes our other deduction games, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. During her first time playing, she wore a wrinkle on her brow a lot for the first few questions trying to get a handle on the game. But then she pulled out the mental guns and was the first to guess her code correctly. Nice job mom!

Code 777 Notes
Tracking sheets are very helpful.

Of course, to win the game you have to guess your code correctly 3 times. So while it didn’t get her the ultimate win, we knew right then that the game was “on”. And in the end, mom gives Code 777 a 5 out of 5! And that’s a huge statement from mom.

Code 777 is actually recommended for ages 10+, but Caleb (7) has joined in on the games as well. However, he did struggle in getting his 3 digit code correct. So we were pleased when we heard from Stronghold Games (the publisher of Code 777) that they recommend that those under 10 only need to guess two of their 3 code numbers. Once we made that adjustment, Caleb got his game on an smacked us all around. So of course he’s on cloud 9.

Code 777 Thinking
Exercise that brain!

But with that, we’ve also made another adjustment in that we play until another person guesses their code 3 times. That way the others can feel complete and Caleb can still claim victory – since he has guessed his about 5 times by then.

How much thinking vs. luck is involved in Code 777?

As Jake said in the video – “It makes my brain hurt.” Yes, there is a lot of thinking in Code 777 and it can challenge your mind to figure out your code. But it’s the thinking that keeps everyone engaged and enjoying the experience.

As you can see from the games we recommend, we have a wide range of games that we like. That’s because there are so many ways to have fun with games that you can always find a fun game for the situation. By no means is Code 777 a light, laugh out loud party game. Nor is it a complicated board game with a lot of pieces and elements to keep track of. The point of the game is very simple, but can tax your mental capacities.

Take a look at some of the questions in 4 languages.

But one reason mom rates Code 777 so highly is because of the mix of skill and luck. As mentioned, there is definitely a need for thinking skills with this board game.

But at the same time, there is just enough luck – as she puts it, “to give me a shot at winning.”

There are many times when you read a question card and wish that it was an opponent answering the question because it’s the exact clue you need to solve your code.

So you have to make the most of the clues you hear and hope that you get some lucky responses as well.

How does Code 777 score on the “Let’s Play Again” meter?

Code 777 scores high on our “Let’s Play Again” meter. Even though we’ve just had the board game a few weeks, I can tell it’s going to be a board game that comes off the shelf frequently.

Code 777 board gameAnd while not everyone at the table will be calling for another play as soon as the game ends, it’s only because they need a mental break. And during that mental break there’s usually a lot of sighs about how close they were or where they went wrong. But once that mental release is over – the challenge begins anew.

So when you’re in the mood for a game that requires you to get your thinking cap on, pull out Code 777. Definitely a great deduction game!

Thanks Stronghold Games for a great family game!
