Tobago – tropical island treasure awaits

Is your family ready to embark on a tropical journey for hidden treasure?
Then head on down to Tobago and you can not only take part in finding treasure, but you also get to determine where it’s hidden.

Can the whole family enjoy Tobago?

Lots of cool stuff!
As with most games, this will depend on how old your kids are and where their interests lie. Watching the video review should give you a good taste for whether your family will like Tobago or not. But due to time, we didn’t cover everything in the video either. Just like there are a bunch of components, there are a number of mechanics to remember as well. So if your kids are old enough not only to keep it all straight but to also figure out how to best use them to their advantage, then they’ll have the upper hand.

The game box says ages 10+, but our two kids that are younger than 10 play Tobago and enjoy it. However, they just take what they get without much planning or thought into which cards they’re going to play or which treasure they’ll play them on. But then again – does that matter if they’re having fun? Nope. The components alone may seal the deal for them. How cool is it to move your jeep around picking up amulets or driving through a lake?

But this board game is also good for younger kids to learn how to think through the process of narrowing down possibilities. Of course, if someone older is playing, the younger ones don’t really worry about that anyway. They just want to see the others narrow it down and then they’ll drive their jeep over to uncover the treasure.

The downside for us is that only 4 can play at a time and it doesn’t really work well for teaming up. But if there’s just 3 wanting to play with some really cool pieces and hunt for treasure – then Tobago is a great board game to pull out.

So what makes Tobago so cool?
The first thing that’s really cool and that adds to the variety of play is the interchangeable, reversable board. We love that in a board game. Much like Settlers of Catan, this is a board game where the board layout changes every time and thus changes the options in the game.

Find that treasure boys!
The next thing are the fantastic components. As you can see in the video review, Tobago has very high quality components. Yes, they only use little cubes to represent where the treasure can be. But everything else is superb – the real looking statues, the wooden huts and trees, the jeeps (ATVs) with painted windshields, amulets, player tokens, and the sturdy cards.

But the cool part in Tobago is the part each person plays in determining where the treasures are hidden. That play mechanic really makes the game.

But there’s even more – So what didn’t we cover in the video review of Tobago?
For starters, we didn’t mention that some of the treasures are cursed. You may be contributing a lot to finding a treasure, only to find out when revealing the treasure cards that this particular treasure is cursed – in which case not only does no more treasure get handed out for that find, but those left in that find will also forfeit their highest value treasure card attained in the game.

But then that’s where the power of the amulets can help out as well – which we just scratched the surface on. If you have an amulet, it can protect you from the curse so you don’t have to forfeit a card. But they do more than that too. And you’ll also notice we didn’t go into detail on how to move your jeep.

So yes, there’s a lot going on in Tobago. But that’s part of what makes it fun and we find that it keeps everyone engaged in the game throughout.

How does it score on the “Let’s Play Again” score meter?
Tobago registers high on the “let’s play this board game again” gauge (where at the end of the game everyone shouts out, “let’s play it again”. When there’s treasure to be found, I guess they just want to keep finding more and more.
