Amazing number of board and card games

Have you ever wondered how many board games and card games there are?

Well, I came across some amazing number last week that will give you a glimpse into the world of board games. For those that aren’t familiar with it, BoardGameGeek is the defacto place to go for information about board games. You can find anything there – every game, all the rules, tons of photos of every game imaginable, and a huge board/card gaming community.

So here are some statistics to boggle your mind (after 10 years of BoardGameGeek).

  • Number of games in the database just passed 45,000
  • If you only played one new game or expansion per day, you would finish playing all of the games and expansions that are currently in the database in 123.5 years
  • There have been an average of 1600-2000 new games and expansions per year since 2003
  • Based on an average play time of 90 minutes per entry, it would take 7.7 years of continuous play to play every game and expansion in the database once
  • If you only took 30 seconds to scan a game entry, it would take you two-and-a-half weeks to look through the entire database.

And to think that we’ve only posted video reviews for 23 games so far…
